Moritz Castle
A fortress and palace in one, the Moritz Castle was built between 1484 and 1517, as a means of intimidating the independence-seeking citizenry of Halle. It was the imposing residence of the Arch-Bishops of Magdeburg, until the 30 year war led to a change in the the order of things in German history. Since the beginning of the 20th century the Saxony-Anhalt art museum has been housed in the castle, including a world famous collection of expressionist art, amongst these the works of Lyonel Feininger.
